A key component of our program is long-term monitoring of the chemistry of our environment. Our monitoring allows us to understand the pollution produced in industrial processes, especially from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline. Our program includes several methods that cover a broad range of pollutants. Precipitation chemistry monitoring, our longest running program, began in 1983. Using a collector that senses moisture and opens to reveal a clean bucket, we collect precipitation after each event. Each sample is bottled and the bucket cleaned and readied for the next sample. The samples are submitted to our analytical lab facility for analysis of a suite of constituents important in acidic deposition.
