These data are collected as part of a joint project of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, The City University of New York NOAA CREST program for Remote Sensing of Hydro-Meteorological and Land Surface Processes and the US Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service.

Soil moisture, temperature and conductivity data are collected at 6 sites using Stevens DataLogic 3000 or DLight dataloggers and Hydra Probe II Soil Moisture, Temperature and Salinity Sensors (SDI-12 / RS485). At each site, 6 sensors are placed at two locations within 5 meters of each other. Each location has 3 sensors at 25, 50 and 100 mm below the surface. Each sensor is scanned and data are logged every 15 minutes and reported to the web via Stevens Cell-Net CDMA & GSM M2M 3G Data Modems. Data from some sites prior to 2015 were reported at 5 or 10 minute intervals. Date_Time data are reported in Eastern Standard Time (EST). The sites and GPS coordinates are Cary Gifford House (41.790833, -73.726554), Cary Greenhouse (41.792259, -73.757106), Millbrook School (41.846107, -73.620243), Dutchess Day School (41.778004, -73.66177), The Fountains at Millbrook (41.731288, -73.65868), and Sky Acres Airport (41.705361, -73.737474).

At one additional site, the USDA site at Cary, data are collected using a Campbell Scientific CR1000 datalogger and Stevens Hydra Probe II Soil Moisture, Temperature and Salinity Sensors (SDI-12 / RS485). At this site, 6 sensors are placed at two locations within 5 meters of each other. Each location has 3 sensors at 2, 5 and 10 cm (25, 50 and 100 mm) below the surface. Each sensor is scanned and data are logged every hour. GPS coordinates for this site are (41.785823, -73.741447).

SOIL DATA QUALITY ASSURANCE & QUALITY CONTROL PARAMETERS & METHODS

Soil moisture, temperature and conductivity data have undergone modest quality control and assurance steps to remove out of range or missing data (e.g., negative or data values greater than 1000). No attempt has been made to adjust for readings of 0. Some measurements of gravimetric soil moisture for each site have been made. For these data, contact Mike Cosh at michael.cosh@ars.usda.gov.
